Unreleased Hindi Films: The Mysteries Behind Bollywood’s Lost Cinema
1. Time Machine (1992) – Aamir Khan, Raveena Tandon
Shekhar Kapur’s ambitious sci-fi film Time Machine featured Aamir Khan, Raveena Tandon, Naseeruddin Shah, and Rekha. It explored time travel—a daring concept for early 90s Bollywood. The film was 50–60% complete. However, Kapur left the project midway after signing Hollywood’s Bandit Queen and Elizabeth.
Producers attempted to revive the film multiple times, but technical challenges and changing cast commitments eventually shelved it permanently. Today, fans consider Time Machine one of Bollywood’s greatest “what if” projects.

2. Dus (1997) – Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon
Directed by Mukul S. Anand, Dus was a high-octane action thriller starring Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Shilpa Shetty, and Raveena Tandon. The film aimed to portray an espionage mission against terror groups.
Unfortunately, the project came to an abrupt halt when Mukul S. Anand passed away during production. Only about 25–30% of the film was shot, including action sequences and music videos. The songs composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, especially “Suno Suno Miss Chatterjee,” became popular despite the film never releasing.
3. Kalasa (Early 90s) – Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit
Produced during Amitabh Bachchan’s hiatus era, Kalasa paired him with Madhuri Dixit and featured a unique courtroom drama plot. The movie faced legal and financial disputes soon after shooting began.
Though nearly half the film was reportedly shot, disagreements between producers and distributors triggered a long legal battle. By the time issues were resolved, the concept and cast combinations were outdated, leading to its permanent cancellation.
4. Devaa (1987) – Amitabh Bachchan, Subhash Ghai
Devaa was supposed to be the dream collaboration between Subhash Ghai and Amitabh Bachchan. Posters were released, sets were built, and initial schedules were completed. The film also starred Rati Agnihotri and Sridevi.
Creative differences between Bachchan and Ghai reportedly caused delays. Production costs rose, and eventually the team shut down the film despite significant progress. Fans still consider Devaa one of Bollywood’s biggest missed opportunities.

5. Ladies Only (1997) – Randhir Kapoor, Seema Biswas, Heera Rajgopal
This remake of the Tamil film Magalir Mattum was nearly completed. Randhir Kapoor directed the Hindi version featuring Seema Biswas and South star Revathi. The movie even had trial screenings.
However, distributor issues and financial instability of the producers prevented a theatrical release. Despite being fully shot, Ladies Only never made it to cinemas—one of the rare cases where an entire film vanished after completion.
6. Dus Kahaniyaan (Alternate Version, Early 2000s) – Unreleased Original Version
Before the 2007 anthology Dus Kahaniyaan, an earlier version with a completely different set of stories was shot in the early 2000s. Production troubles and disagreements over creative direction led to the project being abandoned. Only a few short segments were ever revealed.

Why Bollywood Loses Films
Lost films happen due to various reasons:

- Death of key team members
- Outdated concepts after long delays
Some films remain in storage vaults, while others exist only as scripts, posters, and lost footage.
