Bollywood Superstar Power 2026: Is Star Power Losing Its Magic?

Bollywood Superstar Power 2026: Has the Audience Changed?

The question is no longer whether Bollywood stars are still popular.

They clearly are.

The bigger question is how much their popularity can actually guarantee at the box office.

The 2025 and 2026 seasons provide some fascinating answers.

The Hindi film industry has produced enormous successes during this period. Chhaava, Saiyaara, Dhurandhar, Dhurandhar 2 and several other films have demonstrated that theatrical cinema is very much alive.

At the same time, some films carrying enormous star value have failed to deliver results proportional to their budgets and expectations.

That distinction is important.

Star power has not disappeared. Its role has changed.

Are Bollywood Superstars Losing Their Box Office Power in 2026?

2025 Changed the Conversation About Bollywood Stars

At the beginning of 2025, the industry expected established stars and franchises to dominate.

Salman Khan’s Sikandar, Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force and Housefull 5, Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2, and Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 were among the films carrying considerable expectations.

There was a familiar formula:

Big star + big production + franchise value = big box office.

But 2025 did not follow that formula consistently.

Instead, films such as Chhaava and Saiyaara changed the conversation.

Trade analysis of 2025 highlighted how audiences rewarded emotional connection, novelty and strong storytelling while several franchise films struggled to meet expectations. That was an important warning for the industry.

Salman Khan’s Sikandar: A Major Star Was Not Enough

Salman Khan remains one of India’s biggest movie stars.

There is little doubt about his ability to create awareness around a film.

But Sikandar became one of the clearest recent examples of the difference between star attraction and sustained box-office performance.

The film had everything that traditionally created a Bollywood event: Salman Khan, an action-heavy presentation, a major production house and extensive pre-release attention.

Yet the film did not become the blockbuster many expected.

This does not mean Salman Khan has lost his audience.

Rather, it shows that the audience is no longer willing to continue watching a film simply because a superstar is leading it.

The opening can still benefit from the actor.

The long run depends increasingly on the film itself.

That distinction is becoming central to Bollywood superstar power in 2026.

Hrithik Roshan and War 2: Franchise Power Has Limits

War 2 was one of the biggest tests of contemporary Bollywood star power.

The film brought together Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, two major stars, while also carrying the YRF Spy Universe brand.

On paper, it was almost impossible to make the package bigger.

Yet the film’s theatrical performance fell short of the expectations attached to its scale.

It crossed ₹200 crore in its extended first week, but trade reporting noted that its huge budget made the performance less impressive than the headline collection suggested. This is an important distinction.

A film can make hundreds of crores and still be considered disappointing if its production cost, expectations and franchise value are much higher.

War 2 therefore did not prove that Hrithik Roshan or Jr NTR lack star power.

It proved something more interesting:

Star power can create an opening, but it cannot completely control audience response.

Saiyaara: The Film Nobody Expected to Become This Big

If Sikandar and War 2 represented the limits of star power, Saiyaara represented the opposite.

The Mohit Suri romantic drama introduced Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda as the leading pair.

They did not have the established box-office record of Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan or Ajay Devgn.

Yet Saiyaara became one of the biggest theatrical surprises of 2025.

The film opened at around ₹21.5 crore and continued growing through strong word of mouth. It eventually crossed ₹320 crore India net according to trade reporting, outperforming several established franchise titles.

That is significant.

Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda could not sell the film through decades of established stardom.

The movie had to sell itself through:

  • Music
  • Romance
  • Performances
  • Emotional connection
  • Youth appeal
  • Word of mouth

And audiences responded.

That is one of the strongest examples of how Bollywood’s box-office equation is changing.

Bollywood superstar power , Chhaava , Vicky Kaushal ,Bollywood superstar power in 2026

Chhaava Made Vicky Kaushal a Bigger Star

Chhaava offers another important lesson.

Vicky Kaushal was already an acclaimed actor before the film.

But the Laxman Utekar-directed historical drama took his theatrical image to another level.

The film became one of the biggest Hindi successes of 2025, with reported India net collections crossing ₹600 crore and worldwide collections above ₹800 crore in trade reports.

Why did Chhaava work?

Vicky Kaushal was certainly a major part of it.

But the film also offered:

  • A powerful historical subject
  • Emotional storytelling
  • Large-scale action
  • Strong supporting performances
  • Cultural connection
  • Word of mouth

This is an important difference.

The star did not replace the content. The star and the content worked together.

That may actually be the future model for Bollywood.

Mahavatar Narsimha Proved That Even Animation Can Challenge Star Vehicles

Another 2025 surprise was Mahavatar Narsimha.

There was no conventional Bollywood superstar selling the film.

Instead, the film relied on mythology, animation, family audiences and word of mouth.

It opened modestly but grew dramatically.

Trade reports placed its India net collection above ₹250 crore, while worldwide estimates crossed ₹300 crore.

That is remarkable when compared with several much more expensive star-led projects released during the same period.

The lesson is simple:

Audiences will come if they believe the theatrical experience is worth paying for.

The actor’s surname is no longer the only reason to buy the ticket.

Dhurandhar: Proof That Star Power Is Still Very Much Alive

It would be wrong to conclude that Bollywood stars no longer matter.

Dhurandhar is the perfect counterargument.

Ranveer Singh’s performance became a major part of the film’s appeal, while Akshaye Khanna also received considerable attention for his role.

The film became one of the biggest Hindi theatrical successes of 2025. It combined star performances with a large-scale story, action, character-driven drama and a strong theatrical identity.

This is why saying “star power is dead” would be misleading.

It isn’t.

Instead, star power works best when the audience also believes in the movie.

Dhurandhar 2: The Superstar Is Still an Event

The sequel made this even clearer.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh, became the dominant Hindi box-office story of 2026, with current industry listings putting its worldwide gross at around ₹1,845 crore.

That is not the performance of an industry where stars have become irrelevant.

It is evidence that audiences will still turn a movie into an enormous event when the combination works.

The difference is that the star must now be part of the event rather than being the entire event.

Why Big Bollywood Stars Are No Longer a Guaranteed Box Office Hit

Border 2 and Bhooth Bangla: Franchises Still Have Power

2026 has also shown that franchise value remains extremely important.

Border 2 became one of the year’s major Hindi performers, while Bhooth Bangla also emerged as a significant commercial release. Current industry listings place Border 2 at around ₹464 crore worldwide and Bhooth Bangla above ₹220 crore.

These films demonstrate that audiences have not rejected familiar brands.

What they have rejected is the assumption that brand recognition automatically guarantees success.

A franchise can get people interested.

The film still has to convince them to stay.

The Biggest 2026 Warning: Hanuman Ansh

Perhaps the most interesting case is Hanuman Ansh.

The spiritual drama did not arrive with the conventional machinery of Bollywood superstardom.

It reportedly had a production budget of only around ₹2 crore and opened to extremely modest numbers.

Then something unexpected happened.

Word of mouth took over.

The film kept growing week after week and has now crossed ₹236 crore worldwide according to trade-tracker figures cited by The Indian Express.

More recent reports put the worldwide collection above ₹250 crore and say the film is approaching the ₹300 crore mark.

Whatever final number the film reaches, the bigger story is already clear.

A film without a conventional superstar managed to build an extraordinary theatrical audience.

It is almost the perfect case study for the new Bollywood market.

And Then There Is Haiwaan

The September 2026 release Haiwaan provides another useful contemporary example.

The film brings together Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, two actors with enormous careers behind them, under director Priyadarshan.

The combination created considerable pre-release curiosity.

However, early box-office numbers were modest compared with the expectations attached to the names involved.

That does not mean the final verdict should be rushed.

But it reinforces the larger trend: even two established stars cannot guarantee theatrical success without audience acceptance of the film itself.

This is exactly why 2026 is becoming such an interesting year for studying Bollywood superstar power.

Bollywood in 2026: Are Audiences Choosing Films Over Stars?

What About Shah Rukh Khan?

Shah Rukh Khan remains an important exception.

His recent theatrical successes demonstrated that his name can still create extraordinary audience excitement.

But even his success also points towards the changing definition of stardom.

Modern superstar power is no longer simply about having millions of fans.

It is about creating an event.

The film needs anticipation, a strong theatrical concept, memorable characters, music, social-media conversation and audience emotion.

In other words, the superstar has become the centre of a larger entertainment ecosystem.

Akshay Kumar’s 2025–2026 Run Shows the Other Side

Akshay Kumar is another useful example.

He has maintained an extraordinarily high level of visibility, but the results of his recent releases have varied significantly.

Sky Force, Housefull 5, Jolly LLB 3 and other projects demonstrate that audience response can change dramatically from one film to another.

This is especially important for actors who release several films in a relatively short period.

The audience can still like the actor while rejecting a particular movie.

That distinction was less visible during the era when a superstar’s name alone could dominate the opening weekend.

Ranbir Kapoor Shows Why Star Power Is Becoming More Selective

Ranbir Kapoor represents a slightly different model.

His career demonstrates that audiences are willing to support him strongly when the project creates excitement.

But his value increasingly depends on the identity of the film.

A large-scale spectacle such as Animal can turn into a cultural event.

At the same time, the audience is increasingly evaluating the script, director, genre and overall promise before deciding whether a new Ranbir Kapoor film deserves a theatrical ticket.

That is not a decline in popularity.

It is a more mature form of stardom.

Bollywood Superstar Power 2026: The New Equation

The 2025–2026 evidence suggests that Bollywood’s box-office equation is moving towards something like this:

Star power + strong content + event value = major theatrical potential

But:

Star power without audience connection = risky proposition

And:

Strong content + word of mouth can overcome the absence of a superstar.

That third category is perhaps the biggest change.

Chhaava, Saiyaara, Mahavatar Narsimha and Hanuman Ansh all demonstrate different versions of it.

Audiences Are Becoming More Selective

There is another reason this shift is happening.

Today’s moviegoer has more choices.

A viewer can watch a film in theatres, wait for its OTT release, follow reviews on YouTube, watch social-media reactions or simply skip it and choose another title.

The audience therefore has more information before buying a ticket.

The first-day curiosity generated by a superstar still matters.

But the second weekend increasingly depends on whether viewers actually enjoyed the movie.

That is why word of mouth has become so powerful.

Does This Mean Bollywood Superstars Are Losing Their Value?

Not exactly.

They are losing automatic power, not popularity.

That is an important difference.

A Salman Khan film can still become an enormous event.

A Shah Rukh Khan release can still create unprecedented excitement.

Hrithik Roshan remains one of India’s biggest action stars.

Akshay Kumar remains one of Bollywood’s most recognisable names.

Ranbir Kapoor continues to attract enormous attention.

But the 2025–2026 box office shows that none of these names can permanently override audience dissatisfaction.

The superstar can open the door.

The film has to convince people to walk through it.

The Biggest Winner Is the Audience

This change is actually good news for Bollywood.

When stars know that their name alone is insufficient, filmmakers have more reason to concentrate on scripts, characters and storytelling.

When franchises know that nostalgia cannot guarantee success, they have to offer something new.

And when smaller films realise that word of mouth can transform their box office, they have a stronger reason to take creative risks.

The result could be a healthier Hindi film industry.

The 2025–2026 period has already shown that the audience is willing to reward both stars and newcomers.

It simply wants the movie to earn that reward.

Highlights of Bollywood superstar power in 2026

For decades, a major Bollywood star could almost guarantee a big opening. Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar could bring audiences into theatres simply because their names carried enormous value. But the 2025 and 2026 box office tells a more complicated story. Films led by established stars have continued to produce major successes, but several highly anticipated projects have also struggled despite huge names, expensive production and familiar franchises. At the same time, films such as Chhaava, Saiyaara, Mahavatar Narsimha and Hanuman Ansh have shown that audiences can turn relatively unexpected projects into major theatrical successes.

Conclusion: Bollywood Star Power Is Changing, Not Dying

The question “Are Bollywood superstars losing their box office power in 2026?” does not have a simple yes-or-no answer.

The evidence from the last two years points to something more interesting.

Sikandar and War 2 demonstrate that major stars and expensive franchises can still struggle when the content does not create enough sustained interest.

Chhaava demonstrates how the right role can dramatically strengthen an actor’s theatrical position.

Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha demonstrate that newcomers and unconventional projects can challenge established stars.

Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2 prove that superstar-driven event cinema remains extremely powerful.

And Hanuman Ansh has delivered perhaps the strongest reminder yet that a film does not need a conventional superstar to become a theatrical phenomenon.

So Bollywood is not entering a post-superstar era.

It is entering a post-automatic-superstar era.

The stars still matter.

But in 2026, audiences increasingly want a reason to believe in the movie, not just the person standing on its poster.
